The Programme
What is Open the Book?
Open the Book is a national programme developed by The Bible Society that brings the stories of the Bible alive in primary schools through simple, engaging drama and narration. In schools across the UK, trained volunteer teams visit regularly to present key Bible stories to children – stories told with costumes, props, and a whole lot of heart.
The aim is simple: to give every primary school child the opportunity to hear the story of the Bible – from Genesis to Revelation – during their time at primary school. Not as a lesson. Not as a test. Just as a story worth hearing.

Open the Book at LightSpace Ministries
At LightSpace Ministries, Open the Book is at the core of what we do. Our volunteer teams visit multiple schools across Grantham and the surrounding villages, bringing a different Bible story to life each time they visit. Over time, the children build up a rich picture of the whole arc of the Bible – and often ask for their favourite stories again.
Behind every performance is a props team of creative and dedicated volunteers who design and make all the scenery, costumes, and props. They are an unsung but essential part of the LightSpace family.

Join an Open the Book team
We would love to grow our Open the Book teams. There are more schools in Grantham and the surrounding villages who have already asked for regular Collective Worships – and the only thing standing between us and saying yes is people.
You do not need acting experience or a background in drama. You need to love children, love the stories of the Bible, and be willing to turn up, get into costume, and give it everything. Training is provided, and you will be welcomed into a warm, supportive team from day one.
Behind the Scenes
Join the props team
If you are creative, practical, and love the idea of helping to bring Bible stories to life – but prefer to work behind the scenes – our props team might be just the place for you.
The props team designs and makes all the costumes, scenery, and visual aids used in Open the Book sessions. It is creative, collaborative, and deeply appreciated. Much of the work can be done at home in your own time.
